Shankarrao Genuji Kolhe was an Indian statesman, social reformer, and cooperative pioneer. An agriculture graduate from Pune University, he studied international agricultural models in the United States and Europe before dedicating his life to rural development. Operating in Kopargaon, Maharashtra, he introduced advanced industrial diversification into the cooperative sugar milling sector. To protect local farmers from volatile boom-and-bust cycles of global sugar prices, he integrated distilleries and chemical processing units directly into cooperative mills. By using manufacturing byproducts like molasses to generate ethanol, he created a diversified revenue stream that allowed the cooperative to remain profitable during market downturns and consistently pay premium sugarcane rates to farmer-members. Over his career, he served six terms as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) and handled key ministerial portfolios in the Government of Maharashtra.
